Thyme herb contains an essential oil with a predominance of phenols — thymol and its isomer carvacrol, which determine the main beneficial properties of the plant. Cymol, borneol, terpinene, and terpineol are found in small amounts in the essential oil. Thyme also contains tannins, ursolic, caffeic, chlorogenic and oleanolic acids, flavonoids, gum, bitterness, macro- and microelements.

Thyme has antihypertensive (lowering blood pressure), anticonvulsant, sedative (soothing), analgesic and wound healing effects. Thyme extracts have anticholinesterase activity and are promising for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Experimental studies have revealed the nootropic properties of thyme extracts.

Purpose

Useful properties of Thyme:

  • Due to the presence of rosmarinic acid, flavonoids, thyme preparations, essential oil have a pronounced antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effect.;
  • The bactericidal and fungicidal action is associated with the multicomponent composition of the essential oil, including thymol, carvacrol, borneol, pinene, ursolic acid. Due to the content of thymol and carvacrol in the plant, galenic preparations of thyme (thyme) are effective in inflammatory processes complicated by pathogenic microflora resistant to antibiotics. Even with a negligible content of these phenolic compounds in the infusion, the drug has a pronounced antimicrobial effect. Thymol has a detrimental effect on coccoid pathogenic flora and gram-negative microorganisms;
  • antifungal and anthelmintic. A high antimycotic activity of thymol has also been established against pathogenic fungi. It has a detrimental effect on tapeworms and some roundworms.;
  • pronounced expectorant, mucolytic and bronchodilatory effects. Thyme enhances the secretion of bronchial glands, stimulates the motor activity of the ciliated epithelium of the upper respiratory tract, dilutes sputum and accelerates the evacuation of inflammatory products and mucous membranes. Thyme preparations also contribute to the loosening of inflammatory plaque. With dry lesions of the mucous membranes of the throat and larynx, the plant has an enveloping effect. In addition, thyme has some antispasmodic properties due to the content of flavonoids, which is of no small importance in the mechanism of expectorant action.;
  • hypoglycemic (reduces sugar). Experimental studies have revealed hypoglycemic properties of essential and aqueous extracts of thyme herb;
  • Antitumor drugs.
